A Place Unlike Any Other

Where children and youth grow in connection with nature, community, and themselves — a homeschool enrichment community in Stillwater, Lino Lakes, and Forest Lake, MN.

Welcome to Forest Lake Nature School

We are a homeschool enrichment community where children and youth grow through nature, creativity, and connection.

At the heart of Forest Lake Nature School are stories of connection – tree climbing, animal tracking, and forest forays. Founders Anthony & Melissa Ulrich created FLNS in 2024 as a homeschool enrichment community rooted in gratitude, belonging, and nature connection

Our mission is to awaken deeper connection to earth, others and self, weaving songs, rituals, storytelling, and seasonal rhythms so that children grow in creativity, resilience, and gratitude.

Melissa Ulrich

Anthony Ulrich
All Programs

Anthony grew up in MN, spending much of his childhood immersed in sports, wandering outdoors, and searching for experiences that felt alive and meaningful. Over time, his path led him toward animal tracking, bird language, storytelling, wilderness skills, and the deep nature connection mentoring lineage of Jon Young and 8 Shields. As his journey deepened, so did his desire to help create the kind of childhood he longed for his own children to experience. This eventually led him to co-create a nature connection school (now known as Forest Lake Nature School) with his life partner of 13 years, Melissa. Anthony has led wilderness experiences centered around reconnecting with food, land, and sacred relationship with the living world through activities such as wild rice harvesting, maple syruping, foraging, tracking, and archery. He feels most at home around a fire, following animal trails through the woods, listening deeply, and sharing in the curiosity and imagination that emerge through time spent outdoors together. Anthony brings a grounded, playful, and relational presence to his guiding, and cares deeply about helping cultivate the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible.

Greg Schayes
All Programs

Greg Schayes hails from the temperate rainforests of Washington State where he has been facilitating nature connection since 2006. Greg has a B.A. in Natural History, and a Masters Degree in Education with an outdoor education emphasis. Exploring landscapes is at the heart of Greg’s teaching philosophy and he is passionate about sharing the wonders that can be observed while out on the land. Greg is passionate about building connections between people and nature by engaging their sense of wonder, and tapping into their own curiosity with a strong emphasis on play. When Greg is not sharing his love of nature connection with others, you can find him searching though used book stores, fixing old toyotas, or snuggling with his dog. Greg lives in St. Paul with his wife Becky and his children Casper and Angus. He shares his home with a friendly Labrador named Aoife and a Ball Python named Karamel.

Julia Beasley
All Programs

Julia has been bringing music and art to children her whole life; her mother is a songstress and they sang for every occasion. As a Montessori guide since 2016, music and art have been an everyday practice to unify the classroom, and celebrate! In 2022 Julia left her classroom and has been working in nature connection ever since creating Wilderness Awakening – offering camps, workshops and retreats. Julia began leading healing heart song circles with her beloved sister Dani Coffield, in 2023. Julia’s love for instrument experimentation and singing in nature applies to all ages.

Maddie Fendrick
Chickadee Explorers

Maddie’s personal life has always run interdependently along with the natural world. She grew up in Wisconsin and fell in love with climbing trees, meadow flowers, and the Brule River. In New York City she befriended flowers in cracks while walking in the concrete jungle. Acting and teaching in Alaska meant sharing the neighborhood with a lynx and a moose and her calf. Nashville with it’s music and theatre scene also brought the gifts of a scraggly park just steps from her front door and hot afternoon rains. Moving back to Wisconsin meant new neighbors…a marsh with many gifts in exchange for songs and time. Minnesota brought daily winter walking across a frozen singing lake followed by a prairie along three migratory bird routes and frequent visitors stopping along the way. She’s been part of many places, and stories, questions, and inspiration from each one live and love on through her

Brian Peck
Chickadee Explorers

Brian is in awe of the natural world and revels in it’s beauty and mystery. He loves exploring stringed instruments for the love of their shapes and sounds, and singing brings him much joy. Brian and Madeline Fendrick (spouse) perform as MN music duo Fendrick & Peck sharing songs about life, love, poetry, birds…really anything that is vibrating their souls and is itching to be sung! Becoming a father has been a constant reminder of how grounding it is, for himself and/or his children, to literally walk on unpaved ground!
